God is FUN

God is fun. Yes, you read that right. My blog is about the freedom we have as Christians to struggle to be in the world. But did you know following God is actually fun? Think back to Jesus first miracle.

On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, ‘They have no more wine.’

Woman, why do you involve me?’ Jesus replied. ‘My hour has not yet come.’

His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’

Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.

Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water’; so they filled them to the brim.

Then he told them, ‘Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.’

They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom asideand said, ‘Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.’

What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.” John 2: 2-11

Jesus’ first miracle was to turn water into wine. God encourages us to live joyfully and celebrate. Why not celebrate? God has chosen to give us life through his Son. That is cause for celebration!

I believe there are times when believers should be introspective, but I also think too many Christians are boggled down by things and seriousness.

Some things I want to try to embrace and celebrate are:

  • friendships & relationships
  • the blessings God has given me (my car, house, etc)
  • his creation & the outdoors
  • FOOD
  • every single day that is given to me

Struggle

I was recently watching a documentary called “Beware of the Christians.” It is about four college men who learn to follow Jesus outside of their christian circles by traveling to Europe and diving into different lifestyle issues with all sorts of people. They struggle to answer how to be Christians in a world where we are constantly bombarded with conflicting sources.

“Do not confirm any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-his good, pleasing, and perfect will.” Romans 12:2

One of the things they kept talking about is how being a christian does not mean we will not struggle anymore. In fact, following God is going to be one of the hardest things we are called to do as Christians.

“After you say that little prayer, it is going to be the hardest decision you’ve ever made in your entire life. I mean think about it, you’re giving up your life (handing your life over) to God. You are completely surrendering, humbling yourself before God and changing your life. And its the best decision you’ll ever make. If you’re truly a christian and you are trying to distinguish your lifestyle from this world, it is going to suck. And it’s going to be hard. You’re gonna get made fun of. But it’s worth it.” -one of the college guys from Beware of the Christians

Following God is a struggle within itself. But what I love about that is that the struggle is what God wants from us. God wants us to search for him. God wants us to do the hard things. He calls us to pick up our cross (daily burdens) and follow him.

“We are free to struggle, we’re not struggling to be free”-The Struggle by Tenth Avenue North

The good news is that we are free. We aren’t struggle to meet God’s standards and constantly failing. God’s grace gives us the freedom to struggle and still be embraced with open arms of love and forgiveness. This is the beauty of the struggle.
